Functional Medicine is also called Root Cause Medicine. I like to say that our bodies are like trees and we can be growing the most beautiful leaves, tending to the branches, taking care of the soil, but we have to pay attention to the roots to really understand what's going on inside of us. Functional Medicine looks at the body, mind, and spirit so that you can get a good look at your entire being.
Conventional Medicine is great for a lot of things. If you break your leg, you would be grateful to be seen by a Conventional Medicine doctor. But when we're looking at Conventional Medicine labs, they don't always tell the whole story. There are a LOT of labs that measure really important markers of health that Conventional Medicine doesn't always order. It's not their fault, they are often tied by the insurance companies to order labs that are "medically necessary." Functional Medicine labs are looking at markers to OPTIMIZE your health. These are things like Vitamin D, B12, extensive thyroid testing, and more. Our bodies are complex and when are able to look at more in-depth labs, we are able to get a bigger picture.
Another difference in Functional Medicine labs is that they look at individual needs. Have you ever gone to the doctor and they tell you all your levels are normal and within range, but you still feel unwell? The "Normal Range" is an average of all the labs taken in a laboratory setting. Some of these ranges are very broad! Let's say your TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) is 0.67. The "Normal Range" is 0.45-4.5. So yes, you are technically in range. But what if YOUR optimal level is 3.2? That's very far off and could be impacting how you feel!
This is an important question. I am a Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach. I am not a doctor, a Registered Dietician, or a Nurse Practitioner. With my license, I am able to order labs but I am not able to diagnose, prescribe medications, or treat illness. As a consultant, I am able to review your labs with a licensed physician and then educate you on the results and help you create a health and wellness plan to best serve you. If something on your labs indicates a bigger issue, I will help you find a clinician that can help with your care. Navigating the Healthcare system in America can be extremely difficult, but I have years of experience helping patients stand up for themselves and speak to their clinicians to get the care they need. No one should feel like they are not being heard when trying to improve their health.
The short answer is no. The labs that I will order for you are often categorized by insurance as "not medically necessary". When this happens and insurance doesn't cover it, you get stuck with the bill from the lab. This can be hundreds, or THOUSANDS of dollars! I am able to order very reasonably priced labs that give you more information for a fraction of the price. Some lab tests cost less than $5, while some specialty labs run over $1,000. I am always trying to save you money and be cost effective.
